'Squid Games' Reality Series Sparks Controversy Amongst Fans

Netflix recently announced that they are producing a spinoff show based on ‘Squid Games,' the Korean dystopian series that took the world by storm. The twist? The spinoff will be a reality show, with 456 contestants competing for $4.56 million US dollars, mirroring the titular ‘Squid Games.' The $4.56 million dollar prize is one of the largest lump sums of money ever rewarded in reality TV history. Despite the rabid fanbase of the original show, people were skeptical about this series iteration.

Fans were quick to point out that the games in Squid Games are not inherently interesting. Tug of War and Red Light Green Light are compelling in 'Squid Games' because contestants could die while playing them. This makes it a strange choice for a real reality show where there will presumably be no killing.

Other fans brought up Mr. Beast, a YouTuber who already produced his own version of ‘Squid Games.’

Some viewers believed that Netflix was milking the success of the show too much.

Some Twitter users were baffled that, with their recent financial struggles, Netflix would choose to create a show of this caliber.

It's hard to predict how the public will interact with the Squid Games reality series when it is released. Will it be like Tiger King Season 2, flopping astronomically compared to the first season? Will it maintain its rabid fanbase in the same vein as Netflix shows like Stranger Things? Will Netflix kill people for ratings? Only time will tell.
